~ WELCOME ~

“The truth is: you don't have a life, you are life. The One Life, the one consciousness that pervades the entire universe and takes temporary form to experience itself as a stone or blade of grass, as an animal, a person, a star or a galaxy.” – Eckhart Tolle

Welcome to the home of the music group The Teaching. Thank you for your interest in our music and for visiting our website. May the music here serve to guide you toward the love of your own Being.

This group has a unique origin. It wasn’t formed out of any musical agenda or goal. It was formed spontaneously from a common interest in the wisdom teachings of mankind, and in doing the inner “homework” of integrating truth and keeping the inner space sparkling and clean. The trio has never rehearsed or discussed musical goals of any kind, other than to allow complete devotion, surrender, sensitivity, enthusiasm, and joy to direct the flow of the music. The group’s live performances have become a celebration of life, and a dip in the sea of rapture.

The music weaves seamlessly through a myriad of feels - boom-bap hip-hop grooves, explosive swing, emotion-laden rock, “fat-man” blues, samba, drum ‘n bass, meditative chanting, and so on. Performing weekly for over a year has led to a deep camaraderie and often-telepathic connection, where the “me” of each musician dissolves in a wider “Us” that expands to include everyone in the room. Many of The Teaching’s performances have left musicians and audience members alike in tears, inspired, deeply calm, or ecstatically joyous.

The dear friendship felt by the members of this trio is contagious. The mutual love and appreciation creates a field of wellbeing that can be felt by all. Fueled by this spirit of friendship and devotion, the band’s live performances have made an imprint in Seattle. In Fall 2008, The Teaching will release its debut album and spread the music more widely. There is a deep knowing in the members of this band that the music can touch many human beings around the world, since it emanates from the deepest source within where there is no “you” and “I”, but only “We”, “Us”, The One Life.

Peace & Blessings,

The Teaching

Here's what some cat's have to say about The Hang:

7/17/08 - CultureMob - Fred Roth >>
There I was, slowly approaching the front door of The LoFi when I heard the trio of Josh (Rawlings), Evan (Flory-Barnes) and Jeremy (Jones) laying out a beautiful tone. The music hit me immediately. After that point, I was relaxed and ready to hear what was next.

Moments later, sax players, trombone players and even a word sayer put their own touch on the night. One sax player had a flurry of musical phrases that reminded me of Courtney Pine. The place was packed, with a crowd of enthusiastic listeners. People were friendly and social, it was the kind of party you hope to stumble onto. The Hang is a event you can proudly recommend to your friends.

7/1/08 - Earshot - Rik Wright >>
For over a year now The Teaching have been holding court every Thursday night at the hip Lo-Fi Performance Gallery on Eastlake. Fronted by the Fender Rhodes wizardry of young lion Josh Rawlings and propelled by the groovy duo of up-and-coming bassist Flory-Barnes and spiritual drummer Jeremy Jones, the group improvises an uninhibited set of raw and soothing vibes that will still the most hyperactive of souls. It is a serious hang and a wonderful environment to witness the new generation of the Seattle jazz legacy.

6/28/08 - Listener at The Hang >>
My friends and I really enjoyed being there. All of us felt rejuvenated by the music and the space.

1/11/08 - Seattle Weekly Blog - Jacob Casey >>
Yes, the Lo-Fi is the embodiment of the very cool loft parties that you suspect are happening all the time but will probably never get invited to. Like discovering what scene your older sister is really into, you’ll probably enjoy the casual, but impeccably dressed, party vibe.

The Hang features a jazzy hip hop/jam influenced groove that keeps people continuously bobbing heads or moving hips, while the decorum and well-mixed crowd will scintillate albeit in an occasionally very packed front bar (the larger back room bar wasn’t open last Thursday).

The house band are musically akin to a herd of cats; very cool cats who will oscillate regularly between tight knit grooves and more fluid instrumentation parsed all the while with DJ scratches and even ambient backtracks and are well worth the $3 cover. Though many of the musical components change weekly Evan Flory-Barnes is a weekly fixture on upright bass. Think the Rebirth of Slick basslines slung over busy kick drums and you’ll have perfect backdrop for some vodka cranberry juice sipping conversation (though Pabst remain $2 for the economical lounge-goer). The vibe remains open to dance a little if you’re feelin’ the rhythm.

The band, the people, and the more than reasonable bar make the Hang the low-key late night choice for those who want to feel cool like that on a Thursday.
